Santa Fe NM - The Gustav Baumann House - Baumann is acclaimed as one of the foremost American printmakers of the 20th century. Born in Germany in 1881, his family emigrated to Chicago where he eventually trained at the Art Institute of Chicago. Famous for his color woodcuts, Baumann's initial works were inspired by the valleys of Indiana, displaying the appeal of a simple, natural life. His interest in European folk art was transformed into a passion for Native American culture when he moved to New Mexico in 1918. He lived in Santa Fe, producing oils, sculpture and woodcuts until his death in 1971.
